The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre has become the first convention centre in Australia to achieve three leading international certifications relating to its standards for environmental management, occupational health and safety, and food safety.
The accomplishment reflects the Centre’s focus on implementing the highest possible standards across its operations.
Centre Chief Executive Ton van Amerongen said that the Centre had achieved the ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System and OHSAS 18001:2007 OHS Management System in April this year – a combination that no other Centre in Australia had obtained.
As well as being the first venue in Australia to obtain three international certifications, the Centre is the only convention venue in the world to have achieved these three specific standards.
The new standards come on top of the Centre’s existing ISO 22000:2005 food safety accreditation, achieved in 2007 and renewed most recently this month.
Mr van Amerongen said the venue was now focused on achieving certification for ISO 9001, relating to the establishment of a formalised quality management system setting out procedures across all key areas of a business.
“Certification is a demanding and time-consuming process, but we believe it’s essential for a world-class venue such as ours to demonstrate that we have leading practices,” Mr van Amerongen said.
“We host hundreds of thousands of visitors a year and we have a large, skilled workforce so it’s important that we act responsibly whether we’re controlling our environmental impact, providing a safe workplace or handling food for our many events.”
