Hungarian meetings industry has witnessed a growth last year, shows the freshly publicized statistical report of the Hungarian Convention Bureau.
According to the analysis by Hungarian Convention Bureau, Hungary witnessed a considerable growth in its MICE sector of the tourism industry.
According to the report assessing international conferences held in the country in 2008, 531 international conferences and 57 international fairs and exhibitions took place.
This is a 9.5 per cent and 78 per cent increase respectively in comparison with the year 2007.
The segment is one of the fastest growing in Hungarian tourism. The average participation in the 531 conferences was 225.3 people and the average length of a conference was 3.9 days with most conferences (37.6 per cent) lasting two or three days. The most popular months for meetings were April and September when more than 25 per cent of all the international conferences were held. The majority of the conferences focused on economy, medicine and science.
Approximately 77 per cent of the conferences were held in hotels. Congress centers were used by 14.5 per cent and universities and other scientific institutions hosted some 4.3 per cent of these events. Less than four per cent of the meetings were held in other venues.
The preferred Hungarian destination for conferences is the capital Budapest, 79.5 per cent of the meetings were held here. Besides the capital, the Great Plain and the Transdanubia Regions were also popular destinations.
The foreign participation at these conferences was high. Some 76.9 per cent of conference participants in 2008 were foreigners, approximately nine countries on average participated in these events. More than half of the conferences were organized by Hungarians, while the second biggest organizer was the British with 14.4 per cent.
The country certainly is more and more attractive for meetings’ organizers. It is still a relatively unknown destination, the quality of services is good and the value/price ratio is extremely favorable.
