Hello again, not goodbye for EGU congress in Vienna

vienna_cvbThe farewell party for the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) – for five years one of Vienna’s congress highlights – unexpectedly turned into a welcome celebration.

The farewell gift was ready and waiting when the organizers decided to convene at the Austria Center Vienna for a further two years.

A change is as good as a rest, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) thought, and after five years in Vienna had resolved to change the venue of its General Assembly.

This year’s congress from April 20 thru 24 – held as always at the Austria Center Vienna – was destined to be the last one here for a time, and the organization already had its sights set on other cities.

Christian Mutschlechner, Director of the Vienna Tourist Board’s Vienna Convention Bureau, had already wrapped up a farewell gift for the new President, Tuija Pulkkinen, her predecessor Gerald Ganssen, and EGU Managing Director Martin T. Rasmussen: an Augarten coffee set as a sign of gratitude for many years of loyalty to Vienna.

At short notice, the parcel had to be transformed into a welcome gift when, on the last night of this year’s General Assembly, the EGU surprised everybody with the good news that it would stay in Vienna for another two years. Evidently the Austria Center Vienna – always a winner thanks to its tremendous flexibility and excellent service – coupled with the attractiveness of Vienna proved an unbeatable combination.

The fact that a record number of over 9,000 EGU delegates registered for this year’s General Assembly proved once again that they are by no means tired of Vienna yet.
