The British Wind Energy Conference (BWEC) has chosen Glasgow and the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) for its conference and exhibition taking place in October 2010.
The news follows the venue’s award early this year of Gold in the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS).
The conference returns to Glasgow and the SECC next year with previous visits inspiring the venue to new innovations in green business.
Over the past years the SECC has implemented an internal programme to increase CSR initiatives with the aim of achieving the high standards set out by the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
“The SECC has been at the forefront of green initiatives for some time now and we are delighted to hold Gold in the Green Tourism Business Scheme. However, winning a conference of such environmental significance is the ultimate endorsement,” comments Ben Goedegebuure, Sales Director at the SECC.
“The British Wind Energy Conference needs to be hosted in a venue that reflects its values and we’re delighted they chose the SECC.”
“I’m delighted to see the British Wind Energy Conference adopting an accredited green venue, underlining their CSR remit includes event management as well as their conferences’ vital sustainability content. The SECC is an excellent example of how a large conference and exhibition centre can implement a range of practices from energy saving activities to the encouragement of a greener supply chain,” commented Jon Proctor, Technical Director at the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
“The efforts to reduce waste and recycle are outstanding as is the demonstration through the 'Gig and Go' and other public transport methods to reduce environmental impact.”
“The win further supports Glasgow’s emergence as a green city for business tourism and reflects the efforts of Team Glasgow to offer responsible venues and services,” comments Scott Taylor, Chief Executive, Glasgow City Marketing Bureau.
“We’re delighted to welcome the conference back to Glasgow, its one the entire city is proud to be hosting.”
“New developments are planned and these, together with an excellent green team, will help establish the SECC as one of the world’s leading sustainable tourism venues, and an important part of making the 2014 Commonwealth Games a greener event. This site is only the second venue to gain a GOLD award,” concluded Proctor.
