Glasgow City Marketing Bureau reports that in November and December 2010, 43 conferences were secured by the city – four of which are in excess of 1,000 delegates.
The medical and scientific conferences are all scheduled to take place in Glasgow between 2012 and 2018 and will equate to 16,500 delegates, 49,000 room nights and £22 million in local economic benefit.
These latest wins consolidated a successful 2010, which saw Glasgow convert £2 million of conference business per week between 1 April and 31 December last year.
The level of conference business achieved in the last two months of 2010 demonstrates that the city is on track to achieve £100 million in conventions sales by the end of the current financial year on 31 March.
Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, commented: “These latest successful conference bids illustrate that Glasgow’s proven pedigree as an international meetings destination is winning through - despite intense competition from rival UK and European cities and today’s economic climate.
“The opening later this year of the £74 million Riverside Museum and the advent of Scotland’s new Scottish National Arena at the Scottish Exhibition Conference Centre (SECC) in 2013, coupled with new hotels and other major infrastructure developments, will further reinforce Glasgow’s competitive edge and increase the city’s attractiveness for conference organisers and as a venue for major commercial, entertainment, sporting and cultural events.”
