Challenges Of Working Internationally

IAPCOA record 3743 meetings industry professionals took part in the 55th PCMA Annual Meeting – Convening Leaders”, in Las Vegas in January, of which 3524 attended the PCMA education sessions.

IAPCO’s Mathias Posch, International Conference Services, Vancouver, led one of the key sessions addressing the issues facing PCOs and Meeting Planners when working internationally.

With a session attendance exceeding 150, he explained to enthusiastic professionals who was IAPCO and the quality that the Association stood for.

“We all know why to host an international congress, but there are many factors which influence their success”, professed Mathias, “political, financial, scientific and emotional factors are all ingredients in the mix, along with the required reach and legacy;  there are cultural sensitivities along with other challenges such as currency exchange, customs, taxation, even time zones and differing resources.”

His message was pointed: “Maintain true respect for the local business etiquette and culture;  adapt to the host’s business style and, whilst familiarizing yourself with local practices is essential, ensure that you teach the same to your staff.”

And his advice: “Use a PCO, a Professional Congress Organiser, and one upon whom you can rely, a certified IAPCO member provides that guarantee”.

And why, because a PCO is a partner at your side from start to finish and going international, a PCO can relieve your stress and add value.

The 2012 PCMA Convening Leaders will be held January 8-11 in San Diego, CA.
