Work commences on Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre

brisbane_ccQueensland State Premier, Anna Bligh has announced Laing O’Rourke as the appointed builder of the $130 million expansion of the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.

Construction will commence at the end of June on the site adjacent to the existing centre, with the five level expansion ready for opening in 2011.

The new Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) on Grey Street will add five levels of boutique meeting and event space to the existing centre, offering clients and guests more options and choices than ever before and establishing the Centre as Australia’s most flexible meetings and events venue.

The expanded Centre will be the only convention centre in Australia with three stand alone tiered plenary halls catering for meetings from 400 to 8,000 with a total of 42 meeting and event spaces.

BCEC on Grey Street will have direct access to South Bank’s Grey Street, the vibrant retail and restaurant hub of the unique South Bank Precinct, home to Brisbane’s thriving arts and cultural community.

Convention Centre General Manager, Robert O’Keeffe said the expansion will meet increasing demand for conferences of 400 and 600 and will provide greater flexibility in accommodating concurrent events of different sizes.

The expansion comes at a time when the Centre is currently holding 267 future bookings for conventions; the highest level of convention bookings held since the Centre opened in 1995.
