The Adelaide Convention Centre has won an Australian Tourism Award and two State Meeting Events Australia awards – all on the same night.
Last night (Friday 27 February), the Centre won the hotly contested Meetings and Business Tourism category at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards announced at Melbourne on Crown, applauded for maximising the tourism experience for meetings and business travellers.
And in Adelaide last night the Centre also won the State Meeting Venue more than 500 Delegates category as well as a special Corporate Social Responsibility award, praised for its professionalism, ability to stage first-class major events that impress and initiatives such as its Sustainable Meeting Packages and the donation of food to charity groups through Foodbank.
Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert said the national and two state wins topped off a great year for the Centre and was a tribute to the hard work of the Centre’s Board, senior management and staff.
“These awards reinforce Adelaide’s reputation as Australia’s Convention City and cap off an exceptional year which included a record-breaking revenue result and achieving Green Globe Bronze accreditation and recognition as a Climate Action Innovator,” he said.
“Our success can be attributed our strong team approach underpinned by our Gold Service, Green Attitude philosophy which drives all of our business decisions.
“We are a major player in Australia’s tourism industry injecting millions of dollars into hotels, restaurants, cafes and other tourism-related businesses every year and these awards reinforce our major contribution to the meeting and events and tourism industries.
“When we win the rights to host a major conference, it is not only the Centre that benefits but the entire State as well with conference delegates staying in Adelaide and venturing out to tourist attractions in places such as Kangaroo Island, the Barossa and McLaren Vale and even the Flinders Ranges.
“It is our actions and achievements that speak the loudest and these independent acknowledgements recognise the success of our business and environmental strategies.”
In 2008, Adelaide Convention Centre became the first convention centre in Australia to offer Go for Green conference packages that help conference organisers reduce the carbon footprint of events.
