Sydney has won the right to host the 12th World Harp Congress.
Coming in July 2014, the Congress is the largest international harp conference and will bring up to 1,000 dedicated harp enthusiasts to Sydney to celebrate one of the world's most ancient and universal instruments.
“This bid win proves the diversity and range of Sydney’s events industry. Not only is Sydney a leader in economic and health events, but it is a leader in culture and the arts,” said Mr Jon Hutchison AM, Chief Executive Officer of BESydney.
“It is a privilege to bring this event ashore and we’re confident it will break world records on the number of harps in Sydney and the southern hemisphere at any one time,” he said.
The week-long festival of harp music is expected to attract up to 1,000 delegates, bringing an estimated value of $5.2 million to the local economy.
The 12th World Harp Congress (WHC) promotes the performing arts with special emphasis on harp composition, education, appreciation and performance.
Patricia Wooster, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the World Harp Congress said Sydney was chosen as the host of the congress because of its excellent facilities, hospitality and conference support industry, and friendly and helpful locals.
“We are quite excited about the prospect of meeting in Australia, particularly in the beautiful and vibrant city of Sydney. We particularly value Sydney for the opportunity to provide a location convenient to our growing number of East Asian members, who represent a big part of the WHC’s future,” she said.
This will be the first time the Congress has ever been hosted in Australia with the great majority of past Congresses being hosted by cities in Europe.
The bid to host the Congress was led by Ms. Alice Giles, one of the world's leading harp soloists and a Senior Lecturer at the Australian National University School of Music. It was won in conjunction with BESydney, the organisation responsible for promoting Sydney as a business events destination, identifying opportunities and bringing these events to Sydney.
