Seoul to host 2015 International Congress on Occupational Health

seoul_cvbSeoul has been chosen as the venue for the 31st International Congress on Occupational Health (ICOH), the Seoul City Government announced, noting that the selection was made during the 29th Congress in Cape Town, South Africa on March 26.

The largest international event in the field of occupational health, the congress is held every three years under the auspices of the International Commission on Occupational Health (ICOH) bringing together as many as 3,000 experts from 110 countries.

The 31st ICOH will be hosted by Seoul in 2015, bringing together worldwide occupational health experts. Seoul made a successful bid for the event, which is dubbed ‘The Olympics of Occupational Health’ ousting competitors such as Melbourne and Dublin.

This accomplishment has helped Korea secure a foundation to play a leading role in making international decision in the field of occupational health. Not only has this boosted the nation’s international status, but it will provide an opportunity to raise the nation’s related facilities.

Aimed at contributing to the enhancement of occupational health globally, the ICOH Congress specifically discusses measures to promote information exchange and policy co-operation on such issues as health protection and prevention of occupational diseases for industrial workers.

ICOH is the world’s leading NGO in the field of occupational health, with a membership of 2,000 professionals from 93 countries. Its current president is Dr. Jorma Rantanen of Finland.

The commission was founded in 1906 with the aim of sharing relevant information to ensure the prevention of industrial disasters and occupational diseases. About ten Korean occupational health and safety experts are now working as members of the commission.

With thirty-five scientific committees, the commissions carries out research and development of technologies for the protection of workers’ health in various categories including occupational diseases caused by chemical agents, brain and cardiological diseases, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory disorders, neurotoxicology, job security and health.
