Major international convention gives Brisbane Convention Centre expansion the 'thumbs up'

brisbane_ccManagement of the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) has received the thumbs up from organisers of a major international conference that will be among the first to take advantage of the Centre's newly expanded convention facilities following the completion of Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC) on Grey Street in early 2011.

The first to inspect the early progress of the fast paced ground works on the South Bank site, International Geological Congress Organising Committee Member Dave Mason and Carillon Conference Management Directors, Ashley and Jon Gordon said they were excited at the prospect of the benefits and added flexibility that the new world class facilities would offer.

The 34th International Geological Congress in August 2012, with a forecast 6,000 delegates will take advantage of the unique facilities of the new boutique development on Grey Street as well as occupying the whole of the existing Centre.

The 10 day event is one of Brisbane's largest international conferences and will have a major economic impact on the City, injecting more than $30 million into the local economy.

Mr Robert O'Keeffe, General Manager of BCEC, said the Geological Congress is what the new expanded Centre is all about in terms of its increased flexibility with facilities that are the perfect fit for events of 400 and 600 as well as being able to accommodate the larger events of up to 8,000.

"The appeal and flexibility of the boutique design of Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre on Grey Street are demonstrated by the fact that the International Geological Congress joins six other international conventions already booked into the new BCEC on Grey Street."

BCEC on Grey Street, five levels of boutique meeting and event space will increase the Centre's existing convention facilities by 50% with an additional two tiered plenary halls, 16 meeting rooms and event spaces in addition to two dedicated speakers' presentation centres, able to accommodate an additional 250 events each year.
