The Adelaide Convention Centre is capitalising on South Australia's outstanding reputation in medicine, carving out a niche in prestigious global and Australian medical and scientific congresses.
In the past six months alone, 11 major medical and scientific events have been held at the Adelaide Convention Centre including International Surgery Week - the 43rd World Congress of the International Society of Surgeons attracting 1500 attendees from 79 countries.
The latest event to be hosted at the Centre is the 16th National Conference of the Australian College of Midwives (ACM) - attracting 450 delegates from across the nation - running from today until Friday (22 to 25 September).
Adelaide Convention Centre Chief Executive Alec Gilbert says the value of these prestigious medical events is enormous with recent conferences injecting nearly $26m into the local economy.
"As the first Australian city to initiate a Festival of Ideas and then Thinkers in Residence we are now regarded as a 'thinking city' and our sales team has been able to use this credibility to Adelaide's advantage," Mr Gilbert says.
"As a consequence we have been successful in enticing some of the world's most prestigious medical and scientific events and conferences to South Australia."
The Australian College of Midwives 16th Annual Conference has invited national and international guest speakers including:
Gail Werkmeister, President, National Childbirth Trust in the United Kingdom,
Rosemary Bryant - Commonwealth Chief Nurse and Midwifery Officer, Australian Department of Health and Ageing,
