In a first for the global meetings industry, the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) has announced the upcoming launch of the Green Meetings Portal, an online knowledge center that will bring together knowledge and breaking news from multiple face-to-face meetings on a single website.
GMIC’s own annual meeting, the 2009 Greening the Hospitality Industry Conference, was the first of a series of events to be documented on the site.
“With the whole rationale for meetings under serious attack, the Green Meetings Portal reinforces the incredible value participants receive when they gather for face-to-face learning and discussion,” said GMIC President Amy Spatrisano, CMP. “At the same time, the site will demonstrate a method of using online resources and communities to extend the life and multiply the impact of live events.”
The portal is the result of a partnership between GMIC and The Conference Publishers Inc. of Ottawa, Canada, one of the world’s leading onsite reporting specialists. President and CEO Mitchell Beer, CMM said source material for the site will come from many different meetings, some of them with widely divergent content.
“There may be dozens or hundreds of conferences around the world that touch on the process of greening meetings, or reducing the environmental footprint of the buildings and services that make meetings possible,” he said. “The Green Meetings Portal will give the meetings industry a single window on the green strategies that will help it survive and thrive.”
The Portal begins with inaugural sponsorship from the White Oaks Conference Resort and Spa of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and in-kind support from The Conference Publishers. GMIC intends to announce further sponsorships in the weeks ahead.
