Dallas residents defeated a referendum to prevent the construction of a convention center hotel and future hotels that use public funds, allowing the city to move forward on construction of the planned four-star, 1,000-room hotel connected to the Dallas Convention Center.
Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, members of the Dallas City Council, 30 Dallas hotels, civic leaders and more than 120 associations and companies supported the “Vote No!” campaign to build the hotel, which is expected to be completed in 2011.
“Our 30-year wait for an attached convention center hotel is finally over,” Dallas Convention & Visitors Bureau President/CEO Phillip Jones said at the election night victory celebration.
“Those commitments that were contingent on the convention center hotel announcement are now definite, including but not limited to Helicopter Association International, Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association and Safari Club International. We have other groups representing 600,000 additional room nights waiting on tonight's announcement.”
