2009 Global Sustainable Business Conference a Green Success

GCSGreen Convene Strategies, a leading green meeting planning and event management firm based in Denver, Colorado, and CORE announced results of the green event and waste diversion program at the 2009 Sustainable Opportunities Summit held at the Colorado Convention Center.

More than 66 percent of food scraps and waste generated at this year's event was diverted from landfills, for recycling or composting.

Denver-based nonprofit CORE (Connected Organizations for Responsible Economy) is the Rocky Mountain region's oldest and largest business association dedicated to the promotion of environmentally and socially responsible business practices across the global economy.

CORE co-hosts the annual Sustainable Opportunities Summit with the City of Denver and the Deming Center for Entrepreneurship at the Leeds School of Business, University of Colorado.

The Summit features trends, issues and solutions around sustainability topics such as energy, water, food production, environmental concerns and the global economy, presented by sustainability leaders in the fields of business, government and academia from around the world.

Victoria Stephens, managing principal of Green Convene Strategies, remarked "We're thrilled with the results of greening the 2009 Summit, and we're proud of CORE for taking a leadership position to ensure that the conference was as green as possible."

Graham Russell, Executive Director of CORE, said, "We're extremely pleased with the way Green Convene Strategies managed not only greening the event, but also the conference planning, logistics and reporting. "

An immeasurable amount of waste was avoided altogether by following green practices in the event planning process: selecting the hotel, planning meals with lower carbon footprints, selecting suppliers with sustainability programs in place, coaching exhibitors on green practices, leveraging reusable event supplies and signage, working with a green venue, and more.

Said Stephens, "The Colorado Convention Center has one of the best sustainability programs of any comparable venue in the U.S.; and the support of Sustainability Programs Manager, Lindsay Smith, and her team was vital to making our greening efforts successful."

Said Russell, "The Green Convene Strategies team ensured that the conference went smoothly and efficiently. We met our strategic, financial and social responsibility goals. That's why we've just signed an agreement with Green Convene Strategies to manage the 2010 Sustainable Opportunities Summit."

CORE also recently signed a contract with the Colorado Convention Center, where the 2010 Summit will be held March 2 - 4, 2010. CORE will again co-host the Summit with The City of Denver and The Deming Center.

The 2010 Summit will be about hastening the pace at which effective sustainability strategies and practices are integrated into businesses, large and small. The Summit's Expo will feature cleantech.

Said Stephens, "It's exciting to have the opportunity to build on past success and improve from the baseline we created. We're looking forward to working with CORE, the city, the Deming Center and our joint partners to make the 2010 Summit an exceptional model for green meetings - and the conference of choice for anyone interested in knowing more about economically viable eco-strategies and business opportunities."
