VisitBritain, the national tourism marketing agency, announced a new partnership with the FA Premier League, designed to promote Britain as a top tourist destination and boost visitor numbers.

Under the agreement, VisitBritain has dedicated pitch-side advertising space at FA Barclaycard Premiership matches. Overseas television broadcasts of matches have a global home reach of over 600 million across 195 countries and could draw potential visitors to VisitBritain’s website, www.visitbritain.com.

VisitBritain chief executive, Tom Wright, said:

Britain is the home of football and I am delighted that VisitBritain has this opportunity to work with the Premier League.  In a year when Britain’s sporting heritage has been celebrated by winning the Olympic Games for 2012 and more recently the Ashes, it is a great opportunity to remind football fans that this is the home of the beautiful game.

“The deal is a fantastic opportunity to drive international visitors to visitbritain.com where they can find all they need to plan a trip to and around Britain. Given the tougher tourism climate, this is another powerful element of our marketing activities to bring many more overseas visitors to Britain in 2005 and beyond.”

Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore said:

“The Premier League is immensely popular throughout the world and we hope the exposure this will give VisitBritain will help ensure that more people choose this great country as a holiday destination.

“Our clubs already attract fans from across Europe, Asia, America and Africa and I am sure they all find Britain has plenty to offer in addition to the football.”

Tourism Minister, James Purnell, said:
"Our football teams are world famous - more than 600 million overseas fans tune in to watch their matches. It's good business sense to remind them that, as well as being the birthplace of the beautiful game, Britain is also a great holiday destination. "I am delighted to see this new partnership between the public and private sectors in sport and tourism, as we prepare to welcome the sporting world in 2012."

The partnership is effective from Saturday 24 September and will continue until the start of 2006.
