VisitBritain was named the World’s Leading Tourist and Convention Bureau at the World Travel Awards

tonight (13 November 2005) by more than 200,000 travel and tourism professionals.

Tourism Ministers in 207 countries also voted for the Destination and Convention Bureau Travel Personality of the Year, which was presented to VisitBritain’s chairman, Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge.

Completing its hat-trick of awards, Britain’s tourism agency won the title of World’s Leading Tourism Authority Internet Site for its international consumer website. This is the second year in a row that the website has won the award following stiff competition from Australia, Germany and Thailand.

Commenting on VisitBritain’s success, Lord Marshall said: “I’m very pleased at this recognition of VisitBritain’s world-class performance as our activities and initiatives consistently generate £30 of visitor spending for every £1 of public money invested.

Travel and tourism is widely acknowledged as the biggest industry in the world and is vitally important to the UK’s national economy. By the end of the year 29 million international visitors will have spent almost £14 billion on accommodation, restaurants, shops and attractions, and at destinations and events throughout the country.

“Our new three-year marketing strategies include an ambitious programme of initiatives at home and abroad to further increase the value of our visitor economy. We are developing our websites with the launch of a new flights engine, online shop and next year, on-line booking capabilities, while continuing to invest in new and emerging markets, business travel, global campaigns to boost short breaks and ‘main stay’ holidays, and niche activity for younger visitors, gay and luxury travellers.”

VisitBritain is responsible for promoting Britain as a world class tourist destination and for developing England’s visitor economy. It has offices and representatives in 36 countries around the world and in the last three years, has expanded into China and throughout Eastern Europe and South East Asia, and increased its presence in India with new representatives in Bangalore and Mumbai.

Visit London's work to position the capital among the best cities around the globe was rewarded when London was officially confirmed as the best destination in the world, winning World’s Leading Destination. The capital faced competition from Sydney, Dubai, Paris, Rome, New York and Barcelona to take the coveted title.

The global showcase of excellence, the 12th annual World Travel Awards acknowledge, reward and celebrate the enormous achievements to be found in every sector of the travel and tourism industry. The event took place on the eve of World Travel Market (14 – 17 November) when London welcomes 47,000 travel and tourism professionals from over 190 countries.
