For the second year in a row, Condé Nast Traveler magazine voted Vancouver the “Best City in the Americas” at their annual Readers’ Choice Awards ceremony held in New York.

Vancouver won the top spot over San Miguel de Allende in Mexico, and Buenos Aires in Argentina.

“Winning an award like this is an exceptional honour,” said Tourism Vancouver chair Stuart McLaughlin. “Condé Nast Traveler is well respected, and their readers are discerning and well traveled. The designation is very flattering and goes a long way in raising Vancouver’s profile as a premier travel destination.”

The poll divides cities into five specific geographical divisions including the Americas, which covers Canada, Central America and South America. Cities are scored on ambience, friendliness, culture and sites, restaurants, lodging, and shopping, to give a final ranking. This award is at the top of a long list of accolades that Vancouver has received in recent years. Earlier this month the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Vancouver the world’s most liveable city.

Vancouver’s hotels were also recognized at the awards in the “Best Canadian Hotel” category. Those included in the rankings were the Opus Hotel (2nd), Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver (3rd), Fairmont Waterfront Hotel (4th), Pan Pacific Hotel Vancouver (6th), Sutton Place Hotel (14th) and the Wedgewood Hotel (15th). Vancouver Island once again scooped the “Best North American Island” category, taking the honour over Kiawah Island in South Carolina.

“For the tourism industry in British Columbia to be so highly recognized among Condé Nast Traveler readers speaks volumes about what a great province we have,” said Olga Ilich, British Columbia’s minister for Tourism, Sports and the Arts. “Our tourism industry makes essential contributions to British Columbia’s economy, and as partners with the industry, we are proud to see it move from strength to strength.”

Featured in the November issue of the magazine, the 2005 Readers’ Choice Awards list the world’s top cities, airlines, car rental agencies, cruise lines, hotels and resorts, and islands. Each month, the magazine is seen by an audience of 3.2 million readers, predominantly from the USA. The magazine is one of the top US consumer travel publications and has been conducting their Readers’ Choice Awards since 1988.

Tourism Vancouver’s focus is on building exceptional customer relationships with meeting planners, travel influencers, travel media and independent tourists. The organization’s brand essence is about “exceeding expectations”.
