City of Toronto Council has approved a development proposal which will expand The National Trade Centre complex by adding a new hotel and 75,000 square foot conference facility to be built on the city-owned lands south of The National Trade Centre, and connected via a pedestrian link.

Construction is likely to commence in September 2005, and the opening scheduled for spring 2007.

“This is outstanding news for both The National Trade Centre at Exhibition Place and the City of Toronto,” said Arlene Campbell, General Manager of The National Trade Centre. “This hotel and conference centre will definitely provide long-term support for The National Trade Centre and contribute to increasing city-wide bookings for Toronto.”

The conference centre will be professionally managed and booked by O&Y/SMG Canada, who also holds the management contract for The National Trade Centre. Brisbin Brook Beynon Architects (BBB) has been retained by Toronto hotel developer George Friedmann for the expansion development.

Further details about the design and hotel flagging will be announced shortly.

With over one million square feet of space, the National Trade Centre is the largest facility in Canada and the sixth largest in North America. The National Trade Centre plays host to over 180 events per year including clients such as: Reed Exhibitions, Messe Frankfurt, dmg world media, Exposium, and the National Marine Manufacturers Association.

The National Trade Centre is professionally managed by O&Y/SMG Canada, a Canadian company offering management services to convention and trade centres, arenas, stadiums and theatre across the country. O&Y/SMG Canada is a partnership between O&Y Properties Inc. of Toronto, and SMG of Philadelphia, a leader in the United States in the professional management of 170 first-class trade and convention centres, arenas, stadiums and theatres.
