The Sunshine Coast is playing host to one of the biggest and most prestigious biopharmaceutical conferences this week - the 11th US Cell Culture Engineering Conference - at the Hyatt Regency in Coolum.

Tourism, Regional Development and Industry Minister Desley Boyle said this was the first time the conference had ever been held outside of North America.

"Without the ground breaking field of cell culture, we wouldn't see medical solutions such as vaccines for cervical cancer, polo and chickenpox and the production of artificial livers," Ms Boyle said.

"To be chosen to host this event out of any other location in the world is a huge coup for the Sunshine Coast. It's a win for Sunshine Coast tourism and proof that the region is becoming a global leader in biotechnology. The conference puts Queensland's biotechnology sector, and especially our work in animal cell culture technology, under the global spotlight."

Ms Boyle said the conference attracted the 'who's who' of companies and researchers from around the world using animal cells to produce biopharmaceuticals.

"Queensland's going to be strongly represented by Professor John Mattick, Professor Lars Nielsen, Professor Anton Middleton and Professor Melissa Little, and Queensland company BioPharmaceuticals Australia," Ms Boyle said.

Since the 1980s animal cell culture technology has become increasingly essential for the production of an ever-increasing number of human and veterinary biopharmaceuticals.

Mammalian cell culture is used in livestock breeding, the manufacture of human therapeutic proteins and stem cell technology.

Ms Boyle said the conference was globally recognised as the most important forum for mammalian cell culture technology - and by playing host it would help strengthen Queensland's claims as the national centre for mammalian cell culture.

The conference, to be held from April 13 - 18, is by invitation only and limited to about 350 people.
