The Sunshine Coast Convention Bureau (SCCB) has taken out the 2005 Queensland Award for Best Convention Bureau/Tourist Organisation at the 2005 Meeting and Events Industry Awards held on the Gold Coast at the weekend.

Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa were also successful at the awards, winning the 2005 Queensland Award for Best Meeting Venue for 150-500 delegates.

SCCB Conference and Incentive Manager, Anne-Marie Coulton believes the award reflects the growing importance of business events to the region. “Meeting and Events Australia is the peak body for Business Events in Australia and it is a great accolade for the Sunshine Coast Convention Bureau to receive this award.

The business events market is growing quickly, and now provides significant revenue and employment for the region. This award recognises the achievements of the SCCB team, and the world class conference and meetings infrastructure we now have on the Sunshine Coast,” Ms Coulton said.

The Sunshine Coast is fast becoming a preferred destination for business events with numbers rising 27% in the 12 month period to June 2005, compared to the preceding 12 months, according to the most recent Business Event Survey findings from Queensland Treasury.

John Fitzgerald, General Manager of Tourism Sunshine Coast believes the business events market will provide a greater contribution to tourism revenue and the local economy in the future.

“Business Events are an extremely high-yield revenue sector for the Sunshine Coast” Mr Fitzgerald said. “Recent studies have shown that the average daily expenditure of an international meeting or conference delegate is as much as six times that of an international tourist. The Sunshine Coast is extremely well placed to continue to grow and develop our own Conference and Incentive markets domestically and internationally, well into the future.” concluded Mr Fitzgerald.

The SCCB and Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa will now go on to compete for the national title at the Annual Meeting and Events Industry National Awards, being held on the Gold Coast in April. The event is part of the 19th MEA Annual Meeting and Events Industry Conference from the 26th to the 29th April 2006.
