The Russian bid-team from Sochi erupted in euphoria on Wednesday after Olympic president Jacques Rogge announced that the Black Sea resort would stage the 2014 Winter Games. Sochi beat Pyeongchang of South Korea in a second and final round of voting by International Olympic Committee members after Austria's Salzburg were eliminated in the first round.
Sochi beat Pyeongchang by just four votes with 51 going to the Russians and 47 to the Koreans. Hosting the 2014 Winter Games in Russia would help create a world-class winter sports training and competition legacy for Russian and international athletes. Russia is one of the Olympic Movement’s greatest winter sports powers and yet has never had the opportunity to welcome a Winter Games. In late 2005, the Russian Football Union announced that it was planning to establish a year-round training center for the country's national teams in Sochi and nowadays the work is underway on. Sochi is also the choice of the new democratic Russia - it is the favourite resort of President Putin (his official residence is located here), who enjoys skiing in Krasnaya Polyana and welcoming world leaders to his residence. Sochi has also been home to many famous Russian athletes including Olympic champion Evgeny Kafelnikov and tennis star Maria Sharapova. Today Sochi is also one of the attractive destinations not only for leisure but also for international business and incentive tourism. Many business travelers say there is no place in Russia like Sochi when you need to work creatively or to hold an important meeting.
