From 6am on March 26th 2006, smoking will no longer be allowed in any enclosed public places in Scotland.

The Scottish Exhibition + Conference Centre (SECC), Glasgow will be among companies and organisations complying with the new legislation, passed by the Scottish Parliament to help protect people from the harmful effects of passive smoking.

From March 26th, SECC staff, clients, their contractors and visitors will be unable to smoke anywhere in the venue.  Failure to comply with the ban will be will be classified as a criminal offence and offenders will be liable to a fixed penalty fine.

Signage and guidelines giving advance notice of the introduction of the ban are already in place throughout the venue.

Ben Goedegebuure, Director, Conferences said:

“We are very happy with the new legislation which will create an improved (working) environment for everyone.  However, we do recognise that there may still be a requirement for some clients or visitors to smoke so we are looking at introducing sheltered areas outside the premises to accommodate this.”
