Joe D'Alessandro, chief of the Portland Oregon Visitors Association for the past 10 years was named the new president and chief executive of the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau.

D'Alessandro, who assumes his new duties July 5, succeeds John Marks, a prominent figure in the hospitality industry who is retiring after 19 years with the bureau.

"The breadth of Joe's background will be invaluable to San Francisco," said Jon Handlery, chairman of the bureau's search committee and general manager of the Handlery Union Square Hotel.

Prior to joining the Portland bureau, D'Alessandro served as executive director of the Oregon Tourism Commission and as international program manager for the California Office of Tourism.

He currently serves as chair of the Portland Bologna Sister City Association, co-chair of the Portland International Air Service Committee, and a board member of the Oregon Tourism Commission and the Portland Business Alliance.

Marks, who leaves the bureau June 30, is a past national chairman of the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA) and past chairman of the International Association of Convention & Visitor Bureaus (IACVB).

He also served as vice-chairman of the American Society of Association Executives (now ASAE and The Center) and on the board of the Professional Convention Management Association Foundation (PCMA).
