VisitBritain, the authority for tourism in Britain, today announced the appointment of Penelope, Viscountess Cobham, as deputy chairman of the Board.

Lady Cobham joined the Board of VisitBritain in April 2003 and is currently chairman of the British Casino Association and chairman of 100.7 Heart FM and Galaxy 102.2 FM, both owned by Chrysalis plc.

Lord Marshall of Knightsbridge, chairman of VisitBritain, said: “This is an important appointment for VisitBritain. Penny’s extensive experience in the visitor, leisure and media industries is a great asset for us as we enter into a number of new overseas markets and maintain a comprehensive programme of marketing in partnership with the commercial industry.

“She will work with me to maintain a high profile for the inbound and domestic visitor economy with our key stakeholders as well as ensuring accountability to Government and the industry.”

Lady Cobham said: “Britain has been enjoying record visits from overseas markets and the domestic market is buoyant. However, the challenges of maintaining our competitive position and increasing visitor spend remain and I am looking forward to working with the chairman, the Board and staff of VisitBritain to build the value and profile of tourism in this country.”

Lady Cobham is also chairman of the Trustees of the UK’s largest arts prize, the Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries.

She is a trustee of Thinktank, the Birmingham Museum of Science and Discovery, and also a trustee of People 1st (the sector skills council for the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industries) and has recently completed her term of office as chairman of the Civic Trust, the country's largest urban regeneration charity.

She has also served on a range of private and public boards and national bodies including English Heritage, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Countryside Commission and British Waterways, and has also served as a special advisor on Heritage and Tourism in the Department of National Heritage.

Between 1977 and 1994 Lady Cobham was instrumental in restoring 18th century Hagley Hall and opening it to the public. During that time she was closely involved with the Heart of England Tourist Board.

Lady Cobham’s appointment is effective immediately.
