Palm Beach County's underused convention center will get its first citywide meeting in January, more than a year after opening.

The Global Pastors Wives Network picked the West Palm Beach center for "Free to Soar," its first overnight conference.

Upwards of 2,000 people are expected to attend the event, which runs Jan. 25 to Jan. 27. They will generate between 4,000 and 5,000 room nights of business for more than a dozen hotels.

The Marriott West Palm Beach and Hilton Palm Beach Airport hotels will be headquarters for the conference.

The $84 million center, opened in November 2003, lacks a walking-distance hotel to serve as a headquarters. The closest hotel, the 352-room Marriott, is about half a mile away.

A proposed 400-room hotel adjacent to the 350,000 square foot center is the victim of a complex legal battle between CityPlace Partners and Palm Beach County about who controls the rights to the site.
