Christian Mutschlechner, director of the Vienna Convention Bureau, has been elected president of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

He won the vote at the general assembly in Copenhagen by 177 votes to 161. Postal votes swung the election for Mutschlechner. He received support from 63 absentee voters compared with the 34 absentee votes collected by rival Olivier Lepine, general manager at Biarritz Tourisme.

Mutschlechner's manifesto was 'taking care' - of the identity, corporate database, and communication with members, communication between members.

He said he would increase business opportunities and introduce respect - through individual membership, tapping into retired members' experience and introducing a code of ethics, similar to the US Charter of Human Rights.

Born in 1953, Christian Mutschlechner studied economics and languages before turning immediately to congress organisation. He has headed the Vienna Convention Bureau since 1990.

He has held numerous offices in national and international meetings associations and is currently still president of the EFCT and since 1998 second deputy president of ICCA. Mutschlechner is a keen advocate of opening ICCA up to clients.
