At the recent AGM of the Sandton Tourism Association, Hans Heijligers (General Manager/Director of Operations Inter-Continental Sandton Sun and Towers ) was nominated as Chairman of the Association going for the 2006/7 operational year.

“This is indeed an exciting time for tourist industry growth in South Africa both the business and leisure sectors and I’m delighted to be in a position to participate in marketing Sandton and its stakeholders both nationally and internationally,” says Heijligers.

Once again STA has committed to continuing mentoring of Alexandra Tourism Business Association and maintaining its close working relationship with the Sandton Central Management District.

The new committee comprises 13 members including:

  • Abey Sechoara (ATBA)
  • Alida Canevari (The Hilton)
  • Anne Francis (The Hyatt)
  • Cara Reilly (Sandton Central)
  • Charles Drewe (Sandton Convention Centre)
  • Daniel Leshoe (The Don)
  • Gavin Bell (Garden Court, Sandton City)
  • Hans Prenner (The Michelangelo)
  • Ian Laughland (City Lodge, Katharine Street)
  • Mark Holden (The Westcliff)
  • Sherrie McHaffie & Karen Elson (Liberty Properties)

The allocation of portfolios will be announced following the new Management Committee’s first meeting scheduled for May 2006.

Established in January 2000 to market business and convention tourism to Sandton in preparation for the opening of Sandton Convention Centre in September 2000, the STA has enjoyed a successful, productive six-year run alongside the growth of business tourism in Sandton and the greater Johannesburg area.

The association has maintained a core of 50 to 60 members throughout this period, with members enjoying marketing, networking and information-sharing benefits.

Aside from enjoying status as the most experienced regional tourism association in Johannesburg  (and maintaining a healthy financial position since inception), the association’s board has built lasting relationships with both Alexandra Tourism Business Association (ATBA) and Sandton Central Management District, SA Tourism, the JTC and GTA, amongst others.

Members include Sandton’s top business tourism and hospitality facilities and services. However, the STA’s fee structure recognizes and allows for SMME’s in its fee structure and caters for various types of members across the industry.

The tiered fee structure accommodates members in outlying areas who stand to benefit from convention and business tourism opportunities and developments in Sandton.
