Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB) released the results of the Melbourne Delegate Study 2004 at a press conference at EIBTM today (Nov. 30, 2005).

The study was commissioned by MCVB and the Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre (MECC) to provide an understanding of international and domestic convention delegate’s perceptions of and satisfaction with Melbourne, Australia.

The study, conducted at seven conferences held in Melbourne during October and November 2004, provides valuable data on what delegates regard as Melbourne icons, the transport they use, where they dine and shop and what they tell friends and family about their Melbourne experience.

“The research results indicate that international and domestic delegates thoroughly enjoy their time in Melbourne and that they are able to find time to dine out and shop in a city well known for its excellent cuisine and fashionable boutiques,” said Garry Kingshott, Chief Executive Officer, MCVB.

“The study also highlights how important business tourists are to the city’s economy and provides direction for future destination marketing,” he said.

“Conventions clearly bring a number of business tourists to our city that may not have the opportunity to come otherwise,” said Kingshott.

Results of the Melbourne Delegate study have been divided into six topics: recommendations; dining; shopping; icons; attractions and weather.

  • Delegates recommend Melbourne, Australia
  • Melbourne dining rates highly with convention delegates
  • International convention delegates vouch for Melbourne shopping
  • Trams and Yarra River top icon list
  • 30% of delegates visit regional attractions
  • Weather is not an issue
