Marketing Manchester’s newly launched Conference Ambassador Programme is celebrating its first conference win.

Chris Harrison, one of the first Ambassadors to join the programme from the Christie Hospital in Manchester, has successfully attracted the Organisation of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) to host their annual general assembly in the city in 2009.

The conference will bring 300 scientific and medical experts to Manchester representing a critical mass of cancer research and care institutions of the EU. This will be the first time that this major European scientific conference has been held in the UK.

Marketing Manchester’s successful bid document showcased the range of suitable venues in the city, the fabulous opportunities for social programmes across the region and the regions excellent transport links.  The bid was accompanied by a personal letter of support from Manchester’s Lord Mayor.

Catherine Walker, Head of Conference and Business Tourism at Marketing Manchester says:

“I’m thrilled that our Ambassador Programme has helped to bring this important assembly to the UK. Manchester’s conference team put a lot of time into providing organisers with essential information and it’s great that, with our support, Christie Hospital has been selected to host this event.

“This is an encouraging sign of things to come from this unique project and I look forward to seeing further successes with our current ambassadors.”

Chris Harrison, Medical Director of Christie Hospital commented:

“We are delighted to have been selected to host this prestigious conference. I am so grateful to Marketing Manchester’s Ambassador team for the fantastic bid presentation – it provided just the right sort of information that the judges were looking for and was far more comprehensive than anything we would have been able to produce by ourselves. It definitely gave us the edge over the others in what was undoubtedly a very competitive field.

And the great thing is that the help doesn’t stop with the bid itself… the team at Marketing Manchester have offered continued support with planning and marketing arrangements, and will continue to work with us at Christie Hospital until the conference is successfully delivered.”
