In this era of heightened airport security, meetings travel has taken on a new dimension, especially for international travelers. Meeting attendees face new challenges in securing visas, and exhibitors traveling to U.S. shows from overseas face tighter restrictions on products they can bring into the country.

The Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) will explore these and other related issues in a February 23, 2005 Issues Forum entitled, “Visas, Customs, and Customer Service: Making Life Easier for International Meeting Attendees and Exhibitors.” The event is sponsored by the PCMA Education Foundation and Conference Archives.

Perspectives will be offered by several panelists.

A view from an association professional will be offered by Dave Fellers, Executive Director of the Radiological Society of North America, which holds the largest medical convention in the world with 60,000 attendees every year in Chicago. John Roberson, Commissioner of Aviation, City of Chicago, (invited) will provide a viewpoint from the City of Chicago and airport operations.

Christopher Bowers, CEO of the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau, and former senior executive for United Airlines, will offer perspectives from convention bureaus and airlines.

PCMA also hopes to add another panelist, possibly from the Transportation Security Administration.

The discussion will be moderated by John Callaway, an icon of Chicago television and the former host of Chicago Tonight, who has a strong interest in the topic.

The Issues Forum will be broadcast live from the WTTW public television studios in Chicago, and will be viewed by a live studio audience, which will have an opportunity to pose questions to the panelists. PMCA also plans to offer the Issues Forum as a live teleconference, and a streaming video of the program will be posted on the PCMA Web site the day after the session.

“Meeting attendees face many new issues while traveling, ranging from increased screening to tighter restrictions on visas and new customs processes,” explains PCMA President & CEO David Kushner, CAE, CMP. “We will explore how to make their travel as easy and comfortable as possible while still respecting the importance of government policies. It will be an informative discussion among related organizations in the travel industry and TSA.”

The Issues Forum will run from 2 – 3:30 p.m. Central Standard Time on Wednesday, February 23, 2005. Registration is complimentary. For more information and to register, go to www.pcma.org or contact Glen C. Ramsborg, PhD, Senior Director of Education for PCMA, at 312-423-7262 or gramsborg@pcma.org.
