Industry Mourns Minneapolis Convention Center Director

The meetings industry is mourning the death of Jerry Gallagher, executive director of the Minneapolis Convention Center, who suffered a fatal heart attack Monday in Syracuse, NY, at age 51.

"I am shocked and deeply saddened by the news of this loss to our city," Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said in a statement yesterday. "Jerry was a great public servant and a wonderful person. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him and he will be sorely missed."

Gallagher had led the convention center staff of more than 200 employees since November 2006.

He began his career in the by working for a hotel management firm before joining the Syracuse Convention & Visitors Bureau, in 1985. In 1987, he was named bureau director. In 1995, he joined the Oncenter Complex, also in Syracuse, as president and chief executive.

Gallagher is survived by his wife, Nora, and three children.
