The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) announced a construction milestone has reached with the positioning of the first two main roof trusses weighing collectively more than 3,000 tonnes.

HKCEC Managing Director, Cliff Wallace, stated, “The trusses bring home the reality that the expansion project is taking shape. There will be more business opportunities for HKCEC and other related business. The expanded centre of a total rentable space of 91,161 square metres paves the way for existing and new exhibition growth.”

In the meantime, the HKCEC has just completed a very successful result to highlight its first half of its fiscal year (07-08). Turnover was HK$432 million. The total number of events reached 696 including 56 exhibitions and 13 international conferences, several with exhibitions.

Total attendance for all events from 1 July to 31 December 2007 was 3.3 million including 2.9 million for exhibitions. This successful activity occurred in conjunction with the on-going ingenious construction work of the expansion due to complete in early 2009.

“I have been involved in the expansion or construction of major venues throughout the world. This is one of the most innovative and complex solutions to expansion projects with which I have been associated. The first two main trusses were assembled at ground level, raised to their final elevation, and moved along temporary horizontal steel tracks. The 20,000 square metres of expanded exhibition space on three levels is literally being hung from the structure supported by four main trusses, the last two of which are now being assembled,” Wallace said.
