Greet Potential For Further Expansion In Britain`s Business Tourism

Business tourism leaders are calling for greater support for tourism’s most valuable sector, in a new report, which sets out how conferences, exhibitions, outdoor events, corporate hospitality and individual business visits can add significant numbers of high spending tourists.

“Business Tourism Leads The Way”, published by the Business Tourism Partnership, details how the sector generates nearly 30% of all inbound tourism visitors and earnings to Britain.

New figures for individual sectors put the total value of business tourism at over £20 billion annually to the British economy. Over the past ten years there has been a 53% growth in all business trips exceeding the overall tourism growth rate. It is estimated that the sector provides employment to over half a million people.

The report outlines how investment in business tourism, currently running at an all time high, supports the regeneration of urban and resort areas and contributes to the growth of the leisure visitor economy.

Ways in which business tourism could become more successful include more investment in marketing; greater use of business events to develop trade and exports; increased support in bidding for international events; improved research; securing a sector Standard Industrial Classification; improvements in skill levels and a more proactive approach between National, Regional and local agencies to unleash the potential of the sector.

Michael Hirst, Chairman of the Business Tourism Partnership, said that, “The proven resilience of business tourism is particularly important during these challenging times for tourism. Record investment now taking place is designed to grow the number of business events and increase the number of high spending visitor numbers, all of which supports the accommodation and attractions sectors and sustains some of the best event organising businesses in the world based in Britain.”

“However international competition is intense and Britain needs to do more to retain and win new business.”  He added, “This report outlines how that could be done. Members of the Business Tourism Partnership are committed to leading the way to a more competitive, higher quality and more profitable business tourism sector. With just a little extra support, business tourism could do even better for Britain.”
