Green-Friendly Australia Day Lunch Advances Australia’s Best Fare

The Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre was the venue for one of Australia’s largest corporate lunches last month, with 1500 guests at the Australia Day Council of NSW function enjoying gourmet food from around the country.

Produced using green, renewable energy, and held at Australia’s only Green Globe Benchmarked convention centre, the 2008 Australia Day Lunch promoted environmental awareness, with a rare native Wollemi Pine providing the centrepiece on each of the 150 tables.

This year’s event saw guests enjoying a stunning three-course menu created by Centre Executive Chef Detlef Haupt and featuring raw hazelnuts from Mudgee in NSW, grain-fed lamb from Western Australia, fresh cherries from Tasmania, pannacotta gelato from the Sydney suburb of Newtown, and lightly-smoked perch sourced from several suppliers in Coffs Harbour in NSW.

“Australia has fantastic fresh produce so there’s no better way to celebrate Australia Day than to showcase food from around our nation,” Mr Haupt said.

Organised by the Australia Day Council of NSW, this year’s Australia Day Lunch was produced with the environment in mind, using recyclable materials in its programs, menu cards and invitations, as well as Green Energy – an environmentally friendly, natural source of power.

The 150 Wollemi Pine table centrepieces were donated after the event to the Community Greening Program for replanting in disadvantaged community gardens throughout NSW.

Centre Chief Executive Ton van Amerongen said the Centre, which has hosted the Australia Day Lunch every year since its opening in 1988, was proud to support this year’s event in its promotion of environmental awareness.

“The green initiatives adopted at this year’s lunch reflect the Centre’s own environmental commitments and reinforces our advocacy for environmental sustainability,” he said.

The only convention centre in Australia to have received the international Green Globe benchmark for its environmental practices, the Centre continues to pioneer initiatives – like its highly successful program Ecowise – to reduce its own environmental impact by cutting energy usage, controlling water usage, and minimising waste from conventions and exhibitions.

Now in its 24th year, the Australia Day Lunch was the Centre’s first event for 2008.
