Helsinki Fair Centre, Finland's largest fair centre, has retained its place as the most popular exhibition venue for events aimed at the general public. Boats and motorcycles remain the favourites: there was a marked increase from last year in the number of admittances to the Helsinki International Boat Show 2008 and the Helsinki Annual Motorcycle Event 2008 held at the Fair Centre early in the year. The Nordic Travel and Caravan fairs, which together constitute one of the most popular regular events at the Fair Centre, logged an impressive 85,000 visitors. The spring season at the Helsinki Fair Centre usually starts in January. Spring is led in by the motorcycle show, which had 75,000 visitors this year. The boating season traditionally begins in February with the International Boat Fair, which had more than 89,000 visitors this year. Pentti Kivinen, Managing Director of the Finnish Fair Corporation, mentions several reasons why people are attracted to fairs, the most important of which that consumers have considerable spending power and take a great interest in matters concerning leisure time and housing. Record year 2007 The results of the Finnish Fair Corporation for 2007, by various indicators, were better than in previous years. The number of visitors to the Fair Centre increased on the previous year, to 1,147,000 million. The Helsinki Fair Centre hosted 1,500 meetings, seminars and conferences in its conference facilities. "It makes us very happy to notice that Finnish companies and corporations have found our facilities to be excellent venues for holding parties and other events. Almost all Finnish listed companies have their Annual General Meetings here," Kivinen remarks. The Finnish Fair Corporation and its subsidiary Suomen Videoviestintä SVV (Sound, Vision and Video Projections) made a major entry onto the Russian market in summer 2007 in executing the technical and visual systems of the main conference room at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. "The St Petersburg International Economic Forum is being held again on 7-8 June, and we will be assuming an even greater responsibility for the technical and visual side this year." In 2007, the Finnish Fair Corporation's turnover totalled EUR 58.6 million, an increase of 12.3% on the year before. The company's profitability grew, and the operating profit came to EUR 9.7 million (EUR 8.2 million in 2006). The profit before extraordinary items and taxes totalled EUR 9.6 million (EUR 7.6 million).
