Conferences And Events Fuel Glasgow Hotel Boom

There are 2,400 new hotel rooms planned for Glasgow in the next four years to meet demand from the city’s booming conference, events and leisure travel markets.

The news was released by Glasgow City Marketing Bureau (GCMB) as it unveiled a new advertising creative highlighting the increasing range of hotel accommodation available, and how the city is easier to get to than ever before as new flight routes open up.

The call to action in the advertising is www.seeglasgow.com/more-hotels  and www.seeglasgow.com/more-flights

Glasgow is served by three international airports, all within an hour’s drive from the city centre.

There are flights from 80 worldwide destinations to Glasgow International Airport – which is 12 minutes from the city centre - and in the past three months new services have been added from London City, Stockholm, Calgary, Boston, Vancouver, Toronto and Ibiza, with a new Paris Charles de Gaulle route beginning in October.

There are more than 32 scheduled services to Glasgow Prestwick International, 45 minutes from the city centre, from across Europe. New flights have recently been announced from Amsterdam, Reus, Marseille, Riga, Derry, Warsaw, Gdansk, Poznan, Budapest, Kaunus, Bodram, Dalaman and Grenoble.

Edinburgh International Airport, a 45 minute drive from Glasgow, is serviced by flights from North America, Europe and the Middle East.

Between now and 2011, 2,400 new hotel rooms will be built in Glasgow, including the 600 room Bothwell Plaza complex, which will be Scotland’s largest hotel development. This 600 bedroom complex – featuring a three and a four star hotel - will be built on the city centre site next to a luxury spa and conference centre and function suite for 1400 people.

Among the new hotels is the five star Blythswood Square in the city centre, which is due to open its doors next year. The 88 bedroom hotel in the landmark former Royal Scottish Automobile Club, will feature a spa and extensive conferencing facilities.

Developers Progress Property Developments have submitted plans for what would be the city’s first six-star hotel, the 158 bedroom Argyle International in the heart of the International Financial Services District. The plans include serviced apartments, a banqueting suite for 630 people and a rooftop infinity pool.

Carrying the strapline “arriving now,” the city’s glossy new adverts show successful travellers flying over Glasgow city centre and pictured outside a luxury hotel.

Scott Taylor, chief executive of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “Our research indicates that some convention and events organisers have a misconception of the number and range of hotels currently available in Glasgow and are unaware of the massive growth of hotel provision in the pipeline in the immediate future.

“A recent independent report from accountants PKF showed Glasgow outpacing some of its UK competitor cities by as much as four times when it comes to growth in hotel occupancy. This has created a climate of demand that investors can confidently bridge with the infrastructure that is coming on-stream.”
