From January through to December 2006, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre was the venue for 430 events and over 1.5 million people attended these events producing 1.6million delegate days. Comprising of 146 (34%) banquets and functions attended by 93,697 people, 24 (6%) conventions attended by 28,625 delegates, 39 (9%) exhibitions attended by 1.2m visitors, 206 (48%) meetings and events attended by 68,345 participants and 15 (3%) entertainment productions attended by 57,070 people with the busiest day being on Wednesday 22 November 2006, when 22 separate functions were held on the same day.
The busiest day in terms of attendance was on Sunday 16 April 2006 when over 63,000 people came to the Centre to attend the PIKOM PC Fair. Mr Peter Brokenshire commented on this successful first year “I am extremely proud of the entire Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre team who are so dedicated and who have worked so hard to make this Centre into what it is today. We will continue in our bid to not only meet but exceed our guests’ expectations and provide new standards of service.” Of these 430 events 47 (11%) were international and the balance of 383 (89%) were national or local events. When taking the total 24 Conventions alone, 17 (71%) events were international in nature attended by 22,467 delegates representing 96,213 delegate days. The average attendance at Conventions was 1,195 delegates representing 4,873 delegate days per event and the average duration of Conventions was 3 days. The 39 exhibitions were split 44% Trade (109,000 visitors) and 56% Consumer (1.1 million visitors) with an increasing number being recurrent shows. The Centre currently is the venue for 59% of the exhibitions held in Kuala Lumpur. Commenting on the growth of this sector of business, Mr Brokenshire said “Exhibition organisers were recording increasing numbers when they located their events at the Centre. For example, Offshore Asia Conference & Exhibition was attended by 2,200 visitors, three times the number than in the previous presentation in 2005 and will be returning to the Centre in 2008 with twice the floor area.” The industries represented by all events ranged from Medical to Manufacturing with the top 3 sectors of business in Conventions being Business & Finance (6 events, 25%), Medical & Healthcare (5 events, 21%), Intergovernmental (4 events, 17%).
Exhibitions held at the Centre recorded the top three industries as Education, Careers & Training (7 events, 18%), Business & Finance (5 events, 13%) and General Consumer (5 events, 13%) Highlight events of the year were the major inter-governmental meetings around the 39th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting ( |
