Bulgaria declared its determination to add convention business to its touristic portfolio as the Bulgarian Convention and Visitors Bureau, comprising various stakeholders in tourism, made an overview of its activities in 2004.

Convention tourism will improve Bulgaria's image and create new jobs in 2005, Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg, an honorable guest speaker at the event at Hilton Sofia, said in his opening address to BCVB.

Bulgaria has recorded a tremendous success in the tourism sector with an accent on cultural, agricultural and ecotourism, he added, urging the use of creative marketing for attracting tourists through the so-called golden triangle (Athens - Sofia - Istanbul) and Bulgaria's first-class hotels and congress halls.

2004, the first year of the organization's existence, has indeed been a challenging and encouraging year for BCVB, Friedrich Niemann, Board Chairman of BCVB and General Manager of Hilton Sofia said.

He stressed that convention business holds tremendous potential for Bulgaria's businesses and economy in regards to image, employment and investment.

Niemann cited a study by the German Convention Bureau, which shows that a conventioneer on average spent EUR 715 for his participation in a convention in Western Europe in 2002, which is five times as much as the average tourist spends for his vacation.

What we are trying to do is marry the private to the public sector, Josef Halbherr, General Manager at Kempinski Hotel Zografksi, told journalists, taking up a question on the source of financing for convention business.

Experts single out Bulgaria' slow prices and status of a relatively unknown tourism destination as advantages for making it a competitive conference destination.

They suggest that larger events are held at the National Palace of Culture, while smaller are spread throughout the hotels.

Some 3.6 million tourists visited Bulgaria in 2004, marking an increase of 15.8% year upon year, mainly in seasonal tourism in the seaside and the mountain resorts.

BCVB comprises a membership of 35 companies and organizations related to convention business, local Bulgarian companies as well as global players.
