Mr. Trevor McCartney has been appointed Chief Executive of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching and has already taken up his new post this month.

Trevor was formerly Director of International Sales and Operations at Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) Thailand.

He has broad international convention centre experience having also held posts at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, the International Convention Centre, Birmingham and The Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre London.

Trevor’s first task is to establish the corporate branding, booking policies and pricing structure for the new Centre which is being built by the State Government of Sarawak on a site at the Kuching Isthmus. He will also begin to recruit his pre-opening management team.

Construction work on the 200 million Ringgit Malaysia (RM), centre is proceeding on schedule with an opening date in June 2009. Appropriately, for the first dedicated convention and exhibition centre on the mystical island of Borneo, the new centre’s environmentally conscious design is inspired by the surrounding rainforest.

A major element in the convention centre design is its roof structure. The roof is shaped in the form of a “ririg” leaf, a rainforest plant that plays an important daily role in the local indigenous cultures. Rainwater will automatically be channeled down the central vein of the leaf on the rooftop and collected for irrigation through a sub-surface ecological drainage system.

Trevor commented; “Kuching is really gearing up for an enormous growth spurt at the moment with major investment in new hotels, shopping centres and improved ground transportation. It is an exciting time and I am looking forward to taking up the challenge of establishing the first Dedicated Convention Centre to be built in this beautiful part of the world.”

He adds: “I would like to thank the team at the Sarawak Convention Bureau for their initial work in promoting the Centre to the industry. We are already working on some quotations for conventions looking to use the Centre for their meetings as a result of their preliminary bidding work.”
