Building of the R1.5bn convention centre is to start early 2005 and will take approximately 2 years. Competing with similar facilities in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town, The Tshwane International Convention & Entertainment Centre hopes to get a big slice of the South African convention centre pie, worth about R325-billion a year.

The 4ha development, complete with three-star hotel will be built near the lakeside shopping centre Centurion City and will be able to accommodate more than 10 000 delegates in an ultra-modern auditorium.

Chairman of the consortium developing the complex, Anna Mokgokong, said it is likely going to become an African landmark and its design would be a reflection of South Africa's new democracy, and embody the spirit of a liberated continent.

According to Jacob Ngakane, chief executive of the centre, "South Africa has only 2% of the international conference market. The existing centres are already fully booked for the next five to 10 years. We will not be taking business away from the other centres," in reply to concerns that the convention centre market in South Africa is already full.
