The combination of a new international hosted buyer programme and travel incentives led to a 7 per cent increase in buyer visitors to The Meetings & Incentive Travel Show (October 6-7,Olympia London), according to the show organiser Conference and Travel Publications.

Steve Lewis, director of The Meetings & Incentive Travel Show, said: “This demonstrates the potential for growth through targeted marketing activity. Next year’s plans include an even greater emphasis on the hosted buyer programme and we look forward to working again with Visit London to develop the European dimension of the show.”

The hosted buyer programme operated in partnership with Visit London brought in event organisers from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Sweden and Denmark. Buyers from the North of England and Scotland were also brought into the capital for a combined visit to the show and to experience London’s latest offerings.

The extended visitor promotion programme also featured an additional chartered first-class, Pullman-style ‘Buyer Flyer’ train - bringing delegates directly into Kensington Olympia along the Cardiff line as well as from Birmingham A cash-back offer by the organisers enabled visitors based more than 30 miles from Olympia to claim £20 as a contribution towards travelling costs.

Other initiatives included the appointment of exhibitor success director Charles Blowfield to assist exhibitors in their promotional activities, an extended seminar programme on topics including: attracting association business; conference organising for secretaries; plus procurement and proving return on investment; and more hospitality events. A new Presentation Theatre, sponsored by The Barbican, showcased software products and some of the latest in business entertainers.

It was the second successive leap in buyer attendance after a 15 per cent growth in buyers in 2003.
